Memories of The Beast (sort of)Morning all. Many years ago there was a long-running summer saga involving Arsenal trying to sign a Brazilian player from a Spanish club. We were interested in Julio Baptista, then at Sevilla, and after what seemed like a million stories every day, he ended up going to Real Madrid. ‘The Beast’, as he was known, […] The post Memories of The Beast (sort of) appeared first on Arseblog ... an Arsenal blog.p1r.es

Counterfactual: imagine if it came out that Arsenal had had a chance, no matter how remote, to upgrade on the one position in the team most readily amenable to that with a player of Vincius Jr’s calibre and chose not to do so despite having the means. I’d be hugely disappointed by lack of ambition.

As for alternatives, it’s been source of bemusement for months now that we’ve seemingly gone so cold on Nico Williams - he remains ace, even if his last season was poor. Who knows about wages though, but after good World Cup cameos maybe they’ll soften on that. Plus Barcola is there if someone pays.

Nico Williams has never scored more than 6 goals in domestic league. Far from ace for me.

I meant more in terms of (raw) talent than, as you say, deliverance on it so far. But in a better team and with Arteta’s coaching I can see the vision

Is it still raw talent when he's 24?

Ain’t nobody saying that about Nelli and he’s only a year older… Personally I’m leaning towards keeping what we have given the prices in the market. We struggled last summer to sell Nelli for £50m and now Kroupi may be over double that after one good season and Barcola almost 3 times? It’s mad.

Not really based on age, more environment. Not that far off the situation with Tzolis, albeit he's put up significantly better numbers than Nico W (in weaker league, mind). As in, there's enough there with Williams to suggest in a better team and under a better coach he flourishes. But not a given.

I think that's fair

Excellent article on Romano. I choose not to read anything the says, but I think I am an exception. I stick to Ornstein and Arseblog 😜

My concern is that we would be singing someone who would almost certainly consider himself bigger than the club. So the risk isn't just if we sign him or not, it's how he would conduct himself and how his presence impacts the dressing room. I'm against it personally

I remember the Harry Kewell summer and being utterly gutted he chose Liverpool. I was convinced he was coming to us and used to check updates at my summer job all the time. Worked out alright in the end. Even he says he chose the wrong club

"I just think if you went after any one of the best players in the world, that’s something that’s inevitable." Do Dembele or Olise have "troublesome" reputations? Not that I'm saying we should go for them (as they sound settled where they are) but genuinely querying re the "inevitable" bit.

Not sure if anyone cares but if you’re in Sydney the adidas store accidentally has the third kit out on the racks for sale. Someone clearly didn’t get the late August release date memo

It’s a bit meh btw if I’m honest.

Mad how this happens every year, somewhere in the world!

I love how you went a bit Alanis Morissette near the end there. I thought you were going to say ‘I’m poor but I’m kind’! Also thought Julio Baptiste had died when I saw your headline, so was happy to read just a lament of his time at Arsenal. Happy but broke, even🤘

Does a pivot to a lesser player who will still cost 70 to 80 million make us better?

Ответ для Nick

Probably not, IMO - If any are even available.

Rashford even with the baggage is cheaper, adapted to the league and knows where the net is, Williams in Spain has a 80mil release clause, a few seasons ago he was on fire! I also don't think leao from ac won't be that much, there's also the young Norwegian kid nusa who's used to playing with ode

Julio Baptista is a “never was.” Vinicius Jr. is proven and in his prime.

Different scenario, obviously

Focus is now on Vini, but our interest in Guimares reminds me of our pursuit of Suarez. Suarez was a good player, but for me that couldn't offset his bitey-racism. Couldn't believe Wenger wanted him. Guimares isn't as morally deficient as Suarez, but not a player I'll feel happy cheering on. Hey ho.

Also why is Liverpool leading race for barcola? They spent fortune last year on forwards and are probably buying the only other viable option for us.

I really can’t see this happening and if we are left with no one due to Arsenal not having another viable option this will be gross negligence in my view.I mean it’s not as if we are talking to Madrid or made any offer..all we have said is we will try.Wenger said this many times!!
