I had a very similar experience with Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me. I saw it when it came out and absolutely hated it! And then I watched it last summer, after long discussions with my daughter. And I really liked it, and loved many parts! I would also highly recommend Inland Empire. Brilliant!
