This is a really interesting blog about a curious phenomenon - the rise of high-strength (10%+) pre-mixed cocktails. In absolute terms the price per unit of alcohol on these isn't particularly low, but we might worry about their appeal to younger drinkers.

BuzzBallz. 99p shots. High-ABV canned cocktails marketed to Gen Z. In our latest blog, IAS researcher Emma Thompson examines what the death of 'premiumisation' really means – and why the industry's 'responsible drinking' narrative just got a lot harder to defend. www.ias.org.uk/2026/06/24/t...

One interesting point is that we've seen a lot of recent changes in the alcohol market driven (seemingly) by the August 2023 reforms to alcohol taxes. Most notably the rise of <3.5% beers, ciders and RTDs (alcopops). For RTDs in particular, the reforms sharply cut duty rates for products below 8.5%

But the reforms introduced only a tiny reduction in duty for stronger RTDs (8.5-22%), and subsequent inflation-linked increases have taken the cash-terms duty rates back above the pre-reform level. So, unlike lower-strength alcopops, the rise of Buzzballz isn't being driven by the duty reforms.
