Exactly - at least they hopefully got some good years out of it - plus experience and transferable skills - but what happens to the kids learning those skills in 1976 at the local "focused" school?

And I think the standards were ok. Their woodwork teacher had written textbooks and one of the other teachers taught me A level applied maths after the schools reorganised

There were excellent technical schools, and lesser ones, much like universities, etc. I am all for recognising and respecting more practical/physical skills (many of which are every bit as mentally demanding as well! Horyadaiku...) But it should be a real path, not a subsidy to local employers!
