Ordinary Men is a great book read for this purpose, to understand what ordinary men are capable of. However, the unit Browning studied in detail was not typical of those who carried out the Holocaust and should not be read as claiming that. Many were already violent, pitiless, antisemitic zealots

This is not correct. If you actually read his book, you would know that. Paragraph the German auxiliary police grew to over 400,000 men under the Nazis. As a hole, they carried out much, if not most of the holocaust.

A professor of mine at publication, I remember how much push back Browning received. People didn't want to accept what ordinary men could do. The Rwandan genocide happened two years later.

They still don’t. In innumerable conversations over the years I have found that people’s tribal drives frequently overwhelmed reason, logic, understanding. You are lucky to have had him as a professor!
