So... Looking for your opinions. And if you read this, don't just like it. Please give me feedback. As writers, would you be put off if you mention a book you are about to release, and someone like me approaches you, as a response, and asks if you would mind me reading & discussing it on my show?

Honest response: Me being the paranoid I am, my first thoughts are "what's the catch?" and "Are you buying the book to read it/discuss it on your show?" 1. I'm really big on protecting my intellectual property, so I'm wary whenever anyone approaches - especially when I do not know/recognize their

program/feed. So, I'm pretty hinkey about protecting my assets - they are copyright protected, but if the government(s) isn't enforcing that... Anyway, my first thought is always "what's the catch/risk?" 2. Mine is a VERY small press. Tiny in fact. So much so that when we release a book, we're

extended - over-extended - financially. Because of my anti-a.i. stance, I don't do digital copies, which means physical copies of books only, which is an expense to ship. So, it's all expense and (having been a blogger back in the day, I know this next line sucks, but you wanted the feedback...) for

virtually every avenue out there (there are SO many), it's little clear pathway to break-even before even "reward." In blunter terms: I don't consume BookTok or a lot of bloggers, so I don't see "influencers" as a clear sales channel. And the very first, honest, response I would expect you to have

to that line is, "Hey, check us out and see if we're a good fit!" That's time. Time I could be doing any of the things I'm supposed to be doing to connect with readers to try to sell the book. So, in conclusion, speaking just for my deeply commercially unsuccessful self, if you saw a blurb of any

one of my books and you wanted to discuss it on your show, the most effective approach would be, "I saw your blurb. I'd like to buy a copy of your book and discuss it on my show. Would you be cool with that?" [Interesting footnote to this: after my disbelief faded, I would say, "I'm a niche author,

what if you don't like the book?" Ironically, the answer I'd be looking for you to give to get the "yes!" you want is, "Come on the show and we'll discuss it..." 100% seriously, I loathe critics who like EVERYTHING. It gives me no foundation for whether or not I'll like a work. I WANT discriminating

reviewers. At the last show I did, I had a guy look over my books four times, didn't buy. The price didn't seem to be the issue - he said the paper quality of my books looked really good. Apparently, the dealbreaker was the city in which the novel took place is on the decline, so the bar is mostly

abandoned. My point here is, if you invested in the work, like it or hate it, I'd show up to discuss it -good, bad, ugly- to give your audience the best possible presentation to decide whether they want to buy it or not.] Anyway, if you want to block me, that's fine, but that's *my* honest response.

Thank you very much for the response, WL. I appreciate it. I am going to cheat, in my reply, since we are so limited to the space to type. And include a screenshot of my response. :-) I hope that does not rub anyone the wrong way. ;-)

No problem on the screenshot of the response. Loved what I read from you here! It sounds like a fun show and that you read everything this cranky, pain in the ass writer wrote is impressive. You didn't take anything I wrote the wrong way - my statement on digital copies is a blanket statement, not

anything aimed directly at you. I think what you're doing is very cool and I'll say right now that I respect the hell out of anyone who asks for comments and then puts up with a raw feed like what I put out there. You're classy for that! I'll check your feed out.

BTW... Nothing wrong with "Niche Authors." I have found that some of them have the most interesting stories to tell. :-D

That's - I guarantee - every niche author's favorite line!😀
