I know the answer! I started rereading @kevinmkruse.bsky.social’s One Nation Under God which is about exactly what turned Americans against FDR-style New Deal policies: religious propaganda that “socialism” = “communism” = anti-Christian. “One Nation Under God”. Mostly funded by business owners.
