The infighting in PiS has been an admittedly entertaining subplot of Polish politics for the last few weeks, but today's news has really blown the issue up into a major news story. After years of Kaczynski dominating the party through a selection of loyalist candidates, change is happening.

Morawiecki, PM from 2017 to 2013, has left the party after Kaczynski tried to implement a declaration of loyalty that would ban membership of other political organisations - with Morawiecki's Development Plus being the clear target of the move.

The numbers of those who did not sign are currently unclear - Kaczynski says 30~, Morawiecki says 40+. It appears that Morawiecki will build a new platform and likely party from this, but it's currently unclear when this will be established. What we do know, is they are no longer in PiS.

A year out from elections and PiS' membership and vote alike will be splitting. The fragmentation of Poland's right-to-far right landscape continues, with PiS, Confederation, Confederation of the Polish Crown, and soon Morawiecki's new party all competing.

The working assumption would be Morawiecki going more towards a younger voter base, not the older, nationalist base that PiS has been trying to cultivate under Kaczynski and Przemysław Czarnek (the party's likely PM choice should they win) despite The Crown's rise in prominence.

This aspect will look familiar across Europe - if you are a far right, nationalist voter, why go for the lite version when you could instead have the real thing with The Confederation of the Polish Crown? This comes alongside spats with Ukraine, feuds within PiS' base about Ukraine...

When you factor in the rise of the alternate options and the decline of long time ally Fidesz in next-door Hungary, the lead up to the 2027 election is proving an incredibly bumpy road for PiS.
