Chief Barnes didn’t spend enough time in our wonderful city. Frankly with all of his trips back to Illinois & other venues between March & now, he doesn’t seem to have given a damn.

Thank you mayor for the transparency and willingness to grow on the job!

Did Wilson just scoop ECB?

Nope, ECB revealed almost an hour ago.

Thank you, Mayor Wilson, but given the scope of the serious matter a decision to "fire" the officer would have been warranted. 🇺🇲

I’m so disappointed you’re not taking responsibility for not having a clear crisis communications plan. You should’ve started working on this your first day in office.

So, the interim Chief is from WI, owns a home in WI where his family lives and rents an apartment in Seattle, just like his predecessor. WTF. Perhaps being a cop shouldn't be a WFH situation? Just spit balling here. Seems suboptimal to me.

While the communication throughout all of this has been left wanting, I appreciate you taking accountability and being clear in your words today. Thank you for hearing us, Mayor.

Well said.

CM Foster bargaining hungry children and today's comments by @councilmember-amr.bsky.social of 'concern' that Barnes was fired. Be on notice that WE ARE DONE with "going along to get along". The era of status quo and cowardice is over. People demand action!

Thank You Mayor WILSON! Leadership takes forward momentum!

thank you, @mayor.seattle.gov

Mayor Wilson is incompetent and should resign. recent "Seattle mismanagement" controversies focus on severe fiscal failures within the homelessness response and leadership instability in public safety. Her administration has undergone a major overhaul of its communications and media relations

You fired Barnes because you saw the social media backlash against him not being in Seattle. You panicked and wanted to DO something after you sat on your hands during an emergency. It’s amateurish. You were terrified about your failures being publicized and made rash move to fix it. It didn’t work.

Thank you for speaking directly and taking steps to address the tragedy. I believe Chief Barnes had to go. Whether it results in culture changes at SPD, we’ll see.

you praise the local militia like you're afraid of them. Grow up, they're just dumb cops.

You still remain completely unqualified for the job. Please consider resigning.

This is good.

Why did you fire Barnes? That was the only missing part of that message.

Her office has already said she will discuss it in greater detail tomorrow at 11am.

Also the reasons are self evident. He doesn’t live in the city and wasn’t here during a crisis. And he got hostile with a reporter.

Ответ для Justan

i’m not at all trying to defend Barnes, but to make such a detailed statement like that it just seemed like a significant missing piece. I don’t think this is the kind of thing where you rely on the reasons being “self evident.” if this is all about transparency, just tell us..

And same goes several tragedies during his tenure, sadly Sunday had to be the last straw.

SPD is also facing two separate discrimination lawsuits from gay officers passed over for promotion by Barnes. That can't be part of the official reasons for his dismissal for obvious legal reasons, but I suspect it factored into the mayor's decision.

she didn’t fire him. he resigned

Ответ для Brandon der Blätter

Sure. 🤣 All the stuff bubbling in the media the last 36 hours sure sounds like it wasn’t his idea to resign. I don’t think that gets her off the hook of telling our community why that decision was made, that’s all. I voted for Katie and want her to be successful

generally when you give someone thr option to resign instead of being fired there is an understanding that youre not going to then tell the press you would have fired them for the following reasons. its a way to get someone out w a minimum of drama by allowing them to save some face

Ответ для atomic bog

it very likely was not his idea, but this is standard practice and how you should read most public office resignations

Ответ для atomic bog

Yeah, if you listen to the announcement it's pretty clearly implied that a lack of trust and communication was a major part of the reason.

I think Mayor Wilson is also smart not to get bogged down in the muck. Do you want Hana Kim of FOX13 setting the narrative, or do you want to chart your own progressive path forward?

Ответ для John Toskey

Everyone in Seattle knows why he was fired. I think it's okay to give him the dignity of a resignation, even if it's not really deserved.

Ответ для John Toskey

Probably the fact that he didn't live in the city, and seemed like he wanted to fight reporters who asked him about it. Like a toddler Probably something like that. What do you think?

I think it is costing us taxpayers a lot of money because the city isn’t confident enough in those reasons to stand up in court.
