"Goes out of her way" = does her job. She's arguably *the* leading expert on conveying the Odyssey to a contemporary English-speaking audience. You want her take! It is bizarre. We complain that academics are inaccessible eggheads, and then when an expert writes, accessibly, oh no not like that.
