Just occurred to me: 1 of the lines of the original lyrics was, "I'd be rich as Rockefeller if I only had a brain". The U.S. has always equated wealth/extreme wealth with genius and even the Calvinist belief that it's a God-given blessing that the poor should stand in awe of.
