And to be clear, its Hesiod's theogney, the text written approximately the same time as Homer's epics, which are set in the Bronze Age but are compiled in the Greek Dark Age.

I think you'll find the trojan war was under his Heroic age, not his Bronze age. Hesiod's bronze age is not the bronze age the movie is referring to, either.

Hesiod's bronze age is characterized by *no* stories surviving it: everything that *has* a story comes after Hesiod's bronze age, in his Heroic age. That includes the entire Illiad and the Odyssey.

I take/took the film to be deliberately blurring the historic bronze age and the Hesiod/Mythic one. I'll own up to not remembering the Heroic Age was between the Bronze and Iron age.

I'm aware you and I think differently on how deeply nolan thought about anything. I do want to point out, having looked up works and days in Hesiod, it does refer to the surviving heroes literally living in the islands of the blessed (I believe later those are located in the underworld)

"And they live untouched by sorrow in the islands of the blessed along the shore of deep swirling Ocean, happy heroes for whom the grain-giving earth bears honey-sweet fruit flourishing thrice a year, far from the deathless gods, and Cronos rules over them."

he doesn't go to the islands of the blessed. He goes to the west to an unexplored land to offer sacrifice as penance for his crimes.

I confused this convo with another one where someone said it sounded like he was going to Valinor.

well, no, it absolutely is framed that way in the movie. it is bizarre.

Yeah my point was "the far off land in the west beyond the horizon, like valinor, has roots in the mytho-culture of the time the Oddyssey was written". And that comes back to if you think Nolan thinks about his films or not. I think he does, you think he doesn't, and that is what it is.

You're being very kind to a movie that does not extend the same courtesy to its material but that's your prerogative
