Don't posit a theory that is only interesting because it implies X causes variation in Y, test for a statistical relationship between X and Y, but then say you are not interpreting causally. Of course you are interpreting it causally. That was the whole point of what you just did.

In all seriousness, I think for many people the social/professional threat of even admitting to causal interest (which smells dangerously like inferring causality from correlation) still feels larger than not doing proper causal inference (also doing proper causal inference is hard clearly).

Rather, discuss the assumptions that must be made for causal identification. All causal identification requires assumptions. The inference you are making might just require more than others.
