This is crucial and often unmentioned. Almost every single diagnosis of declining faith in universities fails to mention that it is runs in parallel to declining faith in almost all American institutions. Any failure to recognize this means it is really flawed or not a serious effort.

Maybe because the institutions are captured by grads from those same universities? Those aren’t like uncorrelated proof that trust in cooperation is low, just an extended showing that no-one trusts nepo babies pushing ‘objective meritocracy’ narratives

Govt, schools and uni, science, doctors, media. Coordinated effort by right wing over 3 decades. Longer if you include Birchers. The only source of truth is the GOP talking points and your local pastor.

And comes after a deliberate, years-long campaign to degrade Americans' faith in institutions, some of it seeded by foreign money. Public opinion is not an entirely organic phenomenon that arises spontaneously. People spend a lot of money trying to affect it, and they succeed.
