The next time you hear a government spokesperson thank "all the brave firefighters fighting the wildfires in northern Ontario", here's a little fact to tuck in your back pocket: By the Ontario government's own doing, they are not, in fact, "Firefighters", they are "Resource Technicians".

That's because "firefighter" is a specific job title with specific pay and benefits. By classifying them as Resource Technicians, the province can pay them less than they'd pay a municipal firefighter. They've been fighting for years to be reclassed as firefighters with no progress.

Yeah, on average they make about half or even less of what regularly classified firefighter makes municipally in Ontario or with the federal government. To make it worse, the province hires them on short term contracts with no included benefits or disability insurance
