I just assumed he had some form of savantism. He's very interested and good at one specific thing.

When Watson tells him about the moon he tells Watson he is going to deliberately forget it because it won't help him solve crimes. Watson struggles to get his head around how a man could be so brilliant and so stupid at the same time. 💀
