I was crossing the crosswalk this morning and 2 cars turning left decided to cut me off. One so close that the driver stopped before hitting me and was almost in tears. Did it have to be that way? Not at all. Would I have been tweeting this if the car had hit me, also no.

I would have been another statistic. At 6:25AM another cyclist killed by a car. Not by the driver cos the driver decided that they could make the turn but by a car. When we get in a car we have to be aware and concious all the time that we are able to kill or maim people anytime

Why do we shun away from this accountability/responsibility? We want all the fun and ease of driving but no responsibility whatsoever. Telling an active transportation user to go when they have the right of way defeats the whole purpose of right of way.

We talk about how scary it is in third world countries with no traffic rules but do we hold ourselves to the same/higher standards where not one pedestrian/cyclist/mobility aid user is ever scared to cross the road?!

It has never nor will be about clothing colors/ them being on phones/ or coming on to the crosswalk suddenly. They have the right of way. That is the end of it. No ifs or buts or maybe. Also, let us not bring in the race or gender of drivers. It has nothing to do with that either

Now let us talk about infrastructure. Left and right turn at lights should not be allowed especially after a dedicated turn is in place. It has proven to be a significantly safer option than cars trying to turn with the timer counting down. Dedicated bike lanes.

I understand that dedicated bike lanes are a point of contention but they are also much safer for everyone. I urge you to think of it beyond giving space to active transportation. Active transportation helps in healthy lifestyle dropping your insurance premiums.

It helps in saving on gas/parking. It helps in mental health. You are better equipped to deal with things when you are not stressed about either crossing the road and enjoying the ride/walk/being outside. Let us co-exist and not just be. Thank you from your neighborhood cyclist😊
