Even worse as he was the last president who could have stopped Reagan and to have taken advantage of the Democrats huge majorities back then- a terrible president and by all accounts not a very nice man.

He was very lucky that someone as flawed as Ted Kennedy ran against him and that it still required Teddy running a terrible campaign and a rally round the flag moment for Carter to win.

Baffles me to this day how Carter won the nomination in 1976. He had been Governor for a single term and was very conservative even for the party’s 1970s standards.

As @cjterry.bsky.social has pointed out elsewhere, this was the second time they’d used the new Primary system and the party elites hadn’t really identify how it worked, so an establishment candidate didn’t emerge.

Ha oh yes there was a real ‘oh wait we were suppose to campaign in that random farm state’. It’s really fun reading Caro’s account of the 56 and 60 convention as the modern brain really can’t get its head around how nuts the old process was.

Jumping around I know there’s a great book out too about the shah’s party in 197(1?)- the big fancy tent party. The author was on radio 4 recently

Ok I’m gonna defend the old process here: it wasn’t pretty but it prevented people who were unfit for the presidency from becoming president. Since they brought in the primaries, arguably the majority of presidents have been (to varying degrees) unfit for office in some way

Ha no I weirdly agree; it could have been revised and weirdly the 1960 hybrid with some primaries did kind of work- it also helped with geographic variety and coalition building which was and I guess still is very important in the states

The thing that made no sense was favourite sons- it just lead to straight out machine and corrupt local politics. Caro’s book on LBJ was really good as it showed how little powers senators had over their state delegations at conventions- was all about governors, mayors and county parties.

That’s certainly true, but also I don’t necessarily see that as a problem in practice: governors controlling state parties is more of an issue, but there are too many mayors and counties for any one of them to amass too much power or for their support to be worth too much

I’m not saying individual cases of corruption weren’t really bad in isolation, but in the macro I’m not sure it had too many long term negative consequences

Yeah a system where the primaries serve as a kind of trial run to put candidates through their paces is definitely useful. But you need gatekeepers in a liberal democracy
