Another reason sociology is vulnerable to these attacks is that it’s such a broad church. Its disciplinary boundaries are highly fluid, making it easy to move in and out of the field and for a wide range of interdisciplinary work to be conflated with sociology and sociologists

Sociology has epistemological (science/nonscience), methodological (qual/quat), and political (left/right) divides. It's best when these groups overlap (hi, fellow overlappers!). The external force of right-wing attack is forcing the political divide to the fore. Bad, but maybe inevitable.
