If you can’t pay for social care and have a house why shouldn’t it be sold? If your partner still lives there then the bill gets paid on death. If you rent and have no savings then the local authority pays.

Why. For starters: because that principle does not apply to health care. So why should it apply to end-of-life care? Secondly, a surviving partner may be a good deal younger. The care home cannot wait indefinitely for payment.

It does apply to end of life nursing care. That is funded. What is doesn’t apply to is living in a care home. Why should young people who can’t afford to buy a house be paying out to give inheritances? A charge is put on the property by the local authority if you have a surviving partner.
