Pulled a Salman Rushdie book off a bookshelf when I was clearing Dad’s apartment and found that it was signed.

Yeah the book accidentally found its way into a pile that was taken to a Half Price Books to be sold but they offered nothing for it and handed it back to me!

I've found many signed books for nearly nothing at the Strand - including RN's - but the extent can be stupid - I have a copy of Jan Morris's Manhattan '45 warmly inscribed to some friends, a lot of words, big flamboyant writing - it was priced at $10. The buyers just do not look..

On the other hand, I went to a rare bookstore in Minneapolis and picked up a book marked $10 and the guy argued with me that there was no way it was priced that low and practically accused me of marking it $10 myself. I have never gone back.

Ok just one more - as a gag, Dad once sent me a signed copy of Brian Herbert’s ‘Paul of Dune’ which, even with usps shipping, cost him less than the original cover price of the book.

I once randomly pulled a copy of Stephen Fry's memoir from a Hatchard's display only to find, once I'd gotten back to the hotel room, that he'd signed it. Reminded me of something a writer once told me. Whenever he visited a bookstore, he'd sign all his books. "That way they can't be returned."
