I get so confused by people who go live in another country and don't learn the language. What are they even there for?!

That's the rule with English speakers. Here in Costa Rica it happens with most Americans that chose to come live here, they prefer to live in their small enclaves and barely interact with the locals.

In Costa Rica, most Americans that come here is because they're old and prefer the cheaper healthcare here, so the money of their retirement is enough to isolate themeselves.

Because it's nicer than at home? I guess the colonialist mindset also plays a certain role... But I agree, I didn't speak any French when we moved here, and the first thing we did was take lessons and join an all-French choir. Reasonably fluent now after 8 years. But then it's my 3rd language. 😸
