I also learned today that the chief planned a round of interviews about this schedule today, mostly with TV reporters (who are generally blaming the mayor for comms snafus) but canceled all of them when someone decided this might not be a great look. Given, you know, that three people died.

The chief's outsized reaction to South Seattle Emerald reporter Connor Nash, who asked Barnes about my reporting on his absences from Seattle, has become an international story. Local reporting absolutely matters. PubliCola.com/support

Altogether, Barnes' travel, vacation time, and time out of the office when someone else was serving as acting police chief, total nearly nine weeks this year.

I don’t understand both why people take jobs like this when they don’t want to live in the place and why they are hired for them. They need to be there! Sure something could happen on their 1 week vacation, but this is way beyond that scenario.

well, he's paid $370K, to sit at home in Chicago, so it's not that bad a gig. I'd do that for $300k

Hey Barnes, we’ve got this new policy where we expect you to return to office. Or you can find employment elsewhere.

Would you say the Chief is throwing the Mayor under the bus? The Mayor seems to have done the nice thing and tried to cover for him? Yes , no?
