I remember feeling in graduate school (my PhD is ‘09) that despite the major bombshells & innovation of the 1980s/90s, the field had both consolidated — the first NAVSA happened in maybe 04?—& somewhat narrowed. (V21 was I think a reaction to that sense.) +
