Castlevania alum, Koji Igarashi, returned to the series with this entry and cut Harmony even closer to his work with 1996's Symphony of the Night bringing familiar features in while improving the controls from Circle of the Moon and implementing a new magic system on top of a new, twisted castle.

Though he respected Circle of the Moon's DSS card-based system, Igarashi introduced a new way to wield magic. Traditional secondary weapons like axes and daggers, when used with special magic tomes discovered along the way, can now create a colorful variety of new, powerful effects!

SotN fans will get a sense of deja vu as they romp through this haunted venture. Special gear and relics are scattered once more throughout a multidimensional castle sewn together with nightmarish biomes. Savage creatures, puzzles and multiple endings were all on the bloodstained menu.

Juste also has a few more tricks up his sleeve in addition to his magic. A store (once discovered) supplies him with goodies like health-saving potions, he can equip his whip with enhancements and controlling him is a breeze through a twisting map much larger than the one in Circle of the Moon.

Harmony was well received with critics noting a few rough edges. GamePro's Fennic Fox in their Nov '02 issue wrote that it "feels more like Castlevania than Circle of the Moon did." while also concerned over its lack of originality, the "muddy, plodding" music and the easier bosses.

EGM's Oct '02 issue awarded it "EGM Gold" with Shane writing that despite the "easy bosses" and "low-fi" music, "neither of these issues really impacts the game's greatness" calling it a "spectacular effort." Greg, with a 10, felt that it "fixed" what they didn't like with Circle of the Moon.

Harmony of Dissonance's whip lashing vibe played it safe by building on the best of its PlayStation predecessor right down to the almost too-familiar protagonist. And despite a few blood clots, the sum of its parts proved as exciting as ever, adding another chapter to the Castlevania legend!

Walking into this area is one of the funniest moments of any Castlevania game.
