Sphagnum moss is a major peat builder, and retains an incredible amount of water in its biomass. In northern boglands and forests, Sphagnum mounds (hummocks) are the last to dry out, and the last to burn. But under extreme heat and drought, dessicated Sphagnum is very flammable.
