The Dutch have been studying bio-resilient cities for the past decade, protect existing trees in paving projects (often taking car lanes to give #trees more room to grow), and have added 1000s of new trees when improving bike lanes. The result in Utrecht is a cooler, more beautiful city to bike in.

Utrecht is a fantastic city.

The trouble is that this requires all of the following: 1. Up to some decades to grow the trees. 2. In that time, strong consensus and heavy handed measures and procedures to ensure people can't cut the trees down on a simple majority vote. 3. A level of societal respect for that consensus.

This is intelligent design.

Any idea when those were planted? Our street trees seem to take ages.

I've checked with the municipality and most were planted in 1925. All the more reason to cherish them. (They're plane trees that gain height quickly in their early years)

Houses are more dangerous than trees. And this is inside a city.

When you see that the suburbs of Bordeaux are evacuated now due to megafires (as in LA last year), I wonder if vegetalisation changes the way firemen manage city fires. But maybe not so much, as you suggest.

We can't have this in Portland, for some reason.

What a dream to have such a full canopy of trees above

As a Dutch mobility engineer I can tell you it was the planners who didnt allow the engineers to rip the trees out. After that they looked for other design options. Taking urban space out of sole engineers hands is vital.
