@asherelbein.bsky.social your thread on the Odyssey got me thinking about a recent rewatching of Saving Private Ryan, which I hadn't seen since I was 19. What surprised me as I got to the end of the movie was that it wasn't a movie about WW2.

The movie is set in the context of a WW2 scenario, but doesn't care much about the why's and wherefores of DDay or the broader war. Rather it uses the setting to repeatedly ask whether sacrificing lives of soldiers for the needs of a single man and his family is moral.

But the reason the thread on the Odyssey made me think of SPR is that it most definitely shows that 'war is bad' incidentally (I think) by taking a group of characters, making us like them, and then blowing them all up in horrifying ways. But I think it does this....

...without straying into making 'war is hell' a main theme of the movie necessarily. I would argue it does this using something like horror techniques of making the audience watch as terrible terrible things happen on screen. Anyway, just a thought.
