Right. The world is a mess, people are messy! Some of them know things about their own circumstances that can't be supposed We need not assume these decisions are good, but it behooves us to ask why people would do the non-mathematically-obvious thing rather than thinking we know better than them

I've not watched all the discussion, but I have yet to see someone present is the other way... Is it undeniably worth it to pay $50k of your own money for a 50/50 shot of winning $1m?

I hesitate to get into it but I think the answer is "obviously yes if you only look at the maths" and "obviously no if you understand that life is not just maths" and that there is the split And the split tells us which respondents are serious, because nobody serious thinks "life is just maths"

Probably it is a good call for a much larger number of people whan actually report choosing it. I think the edge cases that make it not worth an expected 1000% return are very rare. But it is STILL more interesting to think about why people would turn that deal down than just "hurh hurh maths"
