If anyone in his family loved him, they would release the truth. If he's dead, they need to grieve and all this subterfuge has got to be traumatic for them. (Me assuming his family loves him.)

Nah, he ain't working. I think he's technically alive, but totally unable to do anything mentally and definitely not physically. Time for him to be removed.
