I think an unfortunate place to start for your thesis is traffic enforcement/traffic deaths. I strongly suspect highway police presence correlates to fewer traffic deaths since most traffic deaths are caused by speeding But that just means we need traffic wardens. Not soldiers playing action hero

everyday they kill an average of three people and hurt hundreds. when the cops save a life, even a puppy, they do a big news blitz abt it. you do not see that happening three times a day. therefore no, they do not save more than they hurt. this is my very scientific conclusion

So hard to document an absence. You'd need to start with a measurable definition of a prevented death. Violent incident where no one is killed because police are there? Deterrent effect of police patrols? Stopping drunk drivers? So many pro-police claims you'd have to dissect.

A grim idea I’ve had is to try to create a database of mass shootings, recording when and whether police actually intervened to stop it. I’ve never felt I had the mental health reserves to take on the task though

Well I mean like best case scenario is someone is killed and the cops show up two hours later to shoot your dog about it so yes lol me too I wanna see the numbers

NYPD went and hid during Covid-19, and crime shot up. It went down when they went back to work. No one talks about that, because the right doesn't want to admit that the police hid, and the left doesn't want to admit that policing reduces crime. Sure looks like cause and effect to me, though.
