I'm fascinated by people who proudly proclaim they don't read prologues or epilogues. These are people chasing stats not looking for a human experience. If a writer writes a prologue, I read it. If they write and epilogue, I read it. Hell, I'll wade through quite a few appendices if they're good.

Some thoughts: 1. Imagine actually thinking you've read JONATHAN STRANGE AND MR. NORELL if all you read was the dialogue. 2. On stat chasers, a guy the other day was crowing that he'd "read six novels this week." Amongst the six? DAVID COPPERFIELD, BLEAK HOUSE, and BELOVED. Right, buddy.

3. Anyone can read (or pretend to read) any way they want. Obviously. There's no secret book police coming. But an amazing number of people seem to think skimming is synonymous with reading and I find that sad and an empty, robotic experience. It's no different than only listening to the chorus.
