The NSF NCAR Dropsonde program was established in 1965! Initially released over storm cells in Colorado, dropsondes are now a key component of meteorological forecasting & research, dropped into storms to share data with researchers. https://www.archives.ucar.edu/exhibits/ncar-timeline
