According to @stevepeers.bsky.social, the protocols to the treaties that mention our exceptions have never been repealed, so are considered still valid.

Strange that the case of currency is even a thing. My country Poland joined 22 years ago and joining Eurozone is not even a thing even though the accession agreement does include adopting the currency. Still it never defined WHEN you are supposed to do it. This British discussion is so out of touch.

Barnier has retired, he has not any particular influence on eventual future negotiations at all. I think most European member states don't see it that way and we're (and are) frankly quite done with British exceptionalism... so I think one should be very critical about this article.

Agree. Barnier is crying because lost the exit game as he did everything to block it and make it painful. Wouldn’t trust that jerk one inch. It could have been amicable and he made it acrimonious

We should start considering using the Euro. Electronic payments could be taken in euros without much admin. No fat fees to banks. Dual currency. Brexit has been a disaster. More unity is necessary @labouruk.bsky.social

No! You have to make the case for the Euro (it is strong) ‘Could’ is irrefutable. All sorts of things ‘could’ happen, even if highly unlikely. The € strengthens the Single Market - it would be advantageous for 🇬🇧 to be in it. So it would be *better* for UK to be in the € Make the case.

In 1923 Irish Free State, UK, IoM & C Isles agreed the CTA. Although ‘frayed‘ at the edges over time in WWII, & after as Ireland became a Republic, & now after Brexit, still the 1st Freedom of Movement predating the EU. If the UK joined now quite practical to stay out of Schengen if Ireland agreed.

The only reason Ireland is not in Schengen is because of Britain and the CTA. Stop blaming others for your need for exceptionalism. Absolutely no reason for the UK to remain outside the EURO or Schengen. Even countries that are not EU members are in Schengen.

FYI the CTA has no legal standing in Irish law. There is an “understanding” but no binding treaty establishing its existence. It came into being because the English never had to show passports entering Ireland before 1922 so why would they afterwards.

Why would Ireland agree to that? A UK that wanted to rejoin the EU would provide the perfect leverage for bringing the CTA within the Schengen area.

#RejoinEU march is a great idea. The M. Barnier comment less so. All justification for exemptions, opt-outs & vetoes died when UK showed its arse to the whole of Europe. We UKinEU witnessed the years of insults. The UK deserves no indulgences. Join properly or not at all. bsky.app/profile/brot...

The former UK-in-EU dispensation made UK look like 'reluctant Europeans' to its own population & to other MS. UK needs to shed the illusion of 'deserving' something better just for being British! It no longer washes, à la #CPTPP. Standard EU Membership - like Germany - is a sight better than Brexit.
