The maternal great grandfather I knew best fought in WW1 in the British army, got injured, fell in love with a nurse at the hospital & they came to the US and settled in the Bay Area where he was a maintenance man at different places before retiring to Fairfax & died in his 90s when I was a kid

Mr. Chimpanzy

One of my paternal great grandfathers was a classic “went out to get a pack of smokes & never came back” guy c. 1930, leading to my grandfather leaving school early to work in the oil fields of west Texas & eventually working his way up to VP at a natural gas company. Can you guess his politics?

He was the 11th & final child born to his mother as she died giving birth to him; his dad shopkeeper, the family Scottish Protestants who grew up in Northern Ireland and I certainly wonder about their politics.

He spoke with a beautiful lilting accent I found so exotic & enchanting in the little time I got to be around him that I remember, age 5-8. He smoked a pipe that smelled lovely, drank a little whiskey every afternoon & wore one of those jockey caps. I thought he was the coolest guy ever
