The main reason there hasn't been a border poll since the GFA is opinion polls show a consistent no majority. The only exception was an Ashcroft poll in September 2018 which had a 1% yes lead. It's not like Britain wants Northern Ireland.

it depends what question you ask. If you ask "do you want a United Ireland?" you get the same green/orange answers. if you ask "do you support a United Ireland in the EU?" you get a very different answer.

Polling in 2025 suggests brexit has changed the conversation about a border poll. For decades, when asked "do you want United Ireland?" the answer was always split along green/orange lines. However, if asked now "Do you want United Ireland in the EU?" - 62% (67% NI) say yes. (source in alt) 3/4

As the question that would actually be asked is: "do you want a united Ireland?" You need a yes on that at least some of the time. The subsequent Ireland in the EU question might reasonably have been interpreted as: "if there is a united Ireland do you want it to be in the EU?"

There are three significant communities in NI now. Green, Orange & Unaligned who are touching 30% in polls now. They don't care about flags - They just care about jobs, health, education etc and it is they who will decide the border poll in NI. To them, the border poll ballot looks like this 👇

Polling on the question *that would be asked* is consistently negative. Polling indicates that a majority expect it to happen but a minority want it to happen. You would expect a similar result for "if partition continues should the UK rejoin the EU?"
