It’s appalling that there’s no good way to tax wealth, as we do wages. And the reasons why are outrageous: It’s easy to hide wealth and difficult to catch cheaters.

Unfortunately there’s is not even a foolproof way to tax earnings/profits, hence large organisations are able to avoid taxes by careful tax planning, which the average person has no ability to take advantage of. We really should have used checks & balances better to prevent oligarchies from arising

If you want to tax something, you need to know it exists and how much it is worth. Wages are easy to locate and have a clear number attached, on a wage slip. You can't do that with wealth unless it's in cash, which is mostly isn't.

To tax something you have to know what it’s worth. But something is only ever worth what someone will pay for it. That is often much less than someone thinks it’s worth. What about the idea of an inheritance tax. When someone dies a portion of their estate goes to the tax man. Just a crazy idea.

Inheritance tax works because it's the point at which someone's entire belongings are given a monetary value. Even then it can take a long time and is subject to legal proceedings etc. Now imagine doing that for everyone, every year. It's not workable.

Income Tax is the biggest revenue in politics.. Income + Tax = Income Tax Taxing work generates the most money.. Just maximize those Incomeses.. With the most middle class minimum jobs.. The poor generate the most tax.. just make the poor rich or middle class..

Start with the Windsors and then the Dukes, Duchesses, Earls and Barons etc then the Cayman Islands and Jersey and the Isle of Man and non doms. The British are so good at avoiding tax.

Not exactly Chump change. Some of their “stuff” is “priceless”, no one is turning out Da Vincis these days. The Duchy of Cornwall alone is worth a billion. But looking at The Times list 2025 a minimum 1% of that 1% would help feed a few and certainly pay some medical bills.

We should also encourage and incentivise philanthropy. Got a spare million? Instead of buying another supercar, or another fabulous home you barely spend any time in, why not build the community a new park and have it named after you instead?

In theory a wealth tax is needed to redistribute the distorted distribution of assets to the top 1%. Practicality of doing this is however a challenge. Asset value can be subjective and could change over time, tracing asset ownership so that the tax falls on the right people could also be difficult.

If it could be implemented, one “solution” could be a one-off 1% tax on all assets across the board,rich & poor alike.. Obviously the monetary value contributed by the poor would pale into insignificance compared to the rich but it might offer a kind of reset to pull things back towards equilibrium?

I agree….but you’ve Murdoch etc who tell people who to vote for We as a society are morons, but some are intelligent. The greens need to remove death taxes, let people keep their homes when in care, raise minimum tax threshold by 10k and that would get the poorest on their side for a start….

I wonder in what extent Meta and Tiktok are biased following the wishes of their leaders. I guess we'll never really know exactly. But I agree that it's easier to make progressive voices heard on these platforms.

I think higher wages so that everything is less profitable is the way to go long term. The rich will make less to be taxed and most people will be better off.

TBH Ed, I'd like to see the exisiting tax system applied equally to all. No special tax breaks, clever schemes would be an obvious starting point. Everyone treated the same and if they don't like it, leave.

A wealth tax is simply a backdated income tax. It’s like saying “we didn’t tax you enough when you earned the money and so we will repossess the money you have accumulated”. It’s “How you become wealthy” that matters.
