During the first Trump admin, Border Patrol agents on Facebook were caught mocking dead migrants and calling them "tonks." Trump's CBP officials denied a broader cultural problem and said they'd crack down. During the second Trump admin, it appears they don't even care to pretend anymore.

These latest texts show that the Border Patrol still has a continuing culture problem. Despite the 2019 scandal leading to the Border Patrol ordering agents never to use the term "tonks," it continues to proliferate among agents, enough that they were texting it to each other on official phones.

Before Trump 47, Border Patrol was actually worse than ICE. ICE was no band of righteous do-gooders but the Nazi thug mentality was much more prevalent in the ranks of CBP It’s from there the Trump regime has imported training to behave especially violently and escalatory. 1/2

It was a CBP agent who murdered Alex Pretti, not ICE. They team up. I get why so much of the messaging and focus has been on ICE; it’s both a bigger presence numerically on the streets & a more memorable name, but the nucleus of the radicalized violent mindset emanates from Border Patrol culture.

When you dehumanize the people you are interacting w/it makes doing violence against them easier. When the majority of an armed group does this to a minority it takes on an element of ethnic cleansing. Not much different than the way Haji was used during the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq.
