I'd recommend to wait with opening the champagne. Even if Vucic really resigns (he promised before without following through), this only means early elections AFAIK. Those elections may not be free and fair enough to push the Vucic regime out. But there is hope, of course.

I wouldn’t include Serbia. Vucic usually calls early elections. The students may have put pressure on him, but this is just him pushing back. He’s challenging the opposition, which has no real policies or leadership. Most observers expect him to win, become PM and install a compliant president.

But there is no intensity or frequency in the US.

So when we see people protest as regularly as it would be necessary, with noticeable consequences to the economy, not just every couple of months, then there’s going be a real chance of it being effective? We’re waiting to see anything even remotely close to that.

Anti-corruptiin impulses gave the United States a wave of new Democrats in Congress after Watergate. And... in the aggregate, the anti-corruption pols from that era sucked.

Problem with US is that it’s almost impossible to mobilise a national protest. Any protest is easily dismissed as a local grievance (city against rural, coast against heartland, university students against real Americans etc). The geography and social divides are against popular uprising.

Yeah…when the elections happen and they don’t involve buses coming from Banja Luka I’ll believe this. Otherwise it’s just Vucic castling again.

Maybe you’re right. Hope so. But Trump has made corruption part of the functioning of the state. It’s all in plain sight, and treated as normal…

That is a terrible take. This is by no means a victory for the student protesters but a prelude to a stolen election allowing Vučić to pull a Putin and become PM.

Americans are either way too complacent to do anything about the dangerous state of their democracy or they’ve just completely faith in the whole self government thing. Either way it’s incredibly sad to see.

We need a general strike, a near-total work stoppage, nationwide. No more of these scheduled No Kings Protests. We need a sustained massive street-level demonstration.

There aren’t enough people in the US who are aware of what’s happening in the country beyond prices being higher.
