The original Dragon Ball was broadcast early morning Sunday, I think it was? On my local UPN. I had a VHS of a few recorded episodes. This was right before Toonami and Pokemon took off. I know Sailor Moon was on tv somewhere but I already knew about that because my brother was really into anime

They kinda needed to because of that stigma. This was still the era of “Toy Story?? No one would watch a whole movie made with computers!!” But advertising anything entertainment-wise in 90’s North America was usually bizarre and cringy

In my experience, both anime and videos games weren’t broadly accepted as a thing normal people do until the late 2000’s. WoW, GTA, Wii Sports, Halo finally moved the needle for video games, it wasn’t something you only talked about with your nerdy friends

Absolutely false My local video store - My Neighbor Totoro needed a sticker explaining the bath scene was a cultural thing and totally fine. You needed ID to rent Faces of Death, Bubblegum Crisis, or Project A-ko because anime was for weirdos DBZ & Pokemon became popular in the VERY late 90s
