The headline here belies the fact that this is perhaps my favorite bit of games writing this year. It's not specifically the point of the piece, but I feel there's a clear eyed view into the heart of what feels wrong with the current landscape as a creator, consumer and critic.
Jake Steinberg🚀 Why does Star Fox 64 keep getting remade? It's not because players NEED to start here or that Nintendo can't make a better on-rails shooter. It's definitely not 'dev practice' Star Fox is a game about replaying and seeing something familiar from a new angle! MY CRUSH: kotaku.com/my-crush-on-...
Please read both of these blogs. The last part here has some of the most incisive writing about game journalism I've read since this piece: unwinnable.com/2026/02/11/a... (they go together imo!)
in the 2nd part, we get macro - the state of writing about games, if games criticism is dead, and offer some insights into our all-time favorites. read Cind’s blog. follow my Patreon. we’ll be back in two shakes.
Good piece that also feels like it’s in dialogue with this article from a few years ago that I think about often: bloodknife.com/everyone-bea...
my debut on the absolutely wonderful Stacks (@thestacks.ca) is an interrogation on the sexuality of Baldur's Gate 3. We all know about the memetic Bear Sex, and how horny the game is, but what is Baldur's Gate 3 actually doing with sex? i'd be delighted if you read on to find out...
I joked in my year end post about being a "gamer aesthete" because I thought the sprite work and design of early Kirby games pleased me on a primal aesthetic level, but good UX and design is a pleasure to interact with and is its own reward! It's a valid way to love a game!
headfallsoffone of the best pieces of video game criticism i stumbled across was in the middle of a fire emblem video and the youtuber didnt realise how foundational a take this was because it seems obvious but it was: the reward when levelling up is not primarily stats and utility, but shiny flashing lights
Me.
David J ProkopetzStarting a new social media platform that does Facebook-style "your display name must be your full legal name and if we ever find out it's not we'll nuke you from orbit" shit, but also enforces unique display names like Tumblr does. Fuck the second and subsequent Steves – global one Steve limit.
If you’re into incredibly simple blogging from a great small team of devs (I think it’s just two people now??) I cannot recommend pika.page enough. They have a guestbook where you can leave doodles on other blogs! I write occasionally at stevetown.blog
Consider making 2026 the Year of the Personal Website. Even a little thing on Neocities works. It’s just nice to have a home base on the internet that you don’t have to deal with bsky mods are random popping into every post and if something goes wrong with your host, you just move it elsewhere
