Public perception- you can't please everyone or make a story for everyone but what you can do best is stick to your vision as truthfully as possible. If you're new to it I imagine it could be like a muscle that gets stronger and doing it comes more naturally as you go.

I would rather a story be executed imperfectly rather than have it be sanded down and made to say nothing at all

That’s not to say it shouldn’t discourage criticism, of course— I know I’ve come out of some shows or films wishing they were better written or given another draft, but I dunno, at a certain point it definitely becomes frustrating.

I think as time goes on I’ve started to realize I’m not a big fan of the idea of “fixing” things that happened in shows/movies etc that people didn’t like. It feels as if there’s a lack of appreciation and understanding for what the creator of the story is trying to convey.
