Instead we have fake outrage posturing from hapless local politicians, performative social media posts from brand influencers, well wishes from celebrities, various grifters cashing in on the spectacle. Same as it ever was The stakes are high but nothing rises to meet them.
The only way to arrest or reverse the threat to New Orleans from conservatives outside of the city is to recognize the parallel threat from conservatives INSIDE the city. This requires building working class political power which we are sorely lacking now.
I disagree with the author's prescription for what to do about any of this. What he misses is that the New Orleans "business community" he's calling on is more aligned with the Governor's agenda than not. Which is why they've been largely silent
They don't need us. Not to run the kind of state they want to run. You're looking at people who make all their money in petrochemicals and bribery. Now they're also selling land to Meta and SpaceX. They have everything they need for that without New Orleans
All of this has been a long time in development. Reducing the once vibrant city to a hollowed out resort town has been the stated purpose of Republican and Democratic Party ruling elites from inside the city and out. It was always leading to this. Some of us have been saying so for over 20 years
