they told me we'd be finished by now 📍New Orleans

I am still mad thinking about Mitch Landrieu actually changing the end date of his term just so he could still be mayor during the New Orleans Tricentennial. They made that whole business so annoying and inescapably ubiquitous. I was dreading this year for America because of it.

In this one you can help him get into heaven if you contribute

And we're moving into austerity mode at precisely the wrong time as well. The economy (local, national, global) is teetering on the brink of disaster. People will need support. Instead they will get more police and surveillance. Inevitably crime will get worse as a result of all this. (3/3)

Some of those factors are within the mayor's ability to affect. City government can help people in housing or mental helath crises. It can act to protect them from abuse by their boss or landlord. But in this city all the talk is about budget cuts. (2/3)

Meanwhile, the parades that were stopped in Orleans were said to have been throwing too many beads too hard at a time. But any attempt to clarify what this meant or see any evidence ended up making the whole thing seem really dubious.

There were viral images of TVs on floats last year. I don't know where they were taken but it looked very much to me like they were not from parades in Orleans Parish.

And it makes the experience more uncomfortable. Route consolidation is really the biggest cause of all the problems people complain about.

The other thing is, gaps in the parade is barely even a problem anymore. I mean they do happen. But nowhere near as frequently as they did say 20 or 30 years ago

NOPD says there must be NO TALKING in the parade

That would be good news. I think from a governmental standpoint, it's usually best to err on the side of caution.

I like to think the President has been drinking it all through a big straw
