if you're after something more modern and/or less english, i can't recommend Sentimental Value (2025) enough, fav movie of all time. hits a little bittersweet and could cut right through you, but it's just so, so beautiful

The Shawshank Redemption (1994) was my first real exposure to good films, and it's still an easy one to recommend. huge highs and crushing lows, shit makes you feel alive

in that case, 12 Angry Men (1957) is basically *the* classic for a lot of people, and for good reason. moves at a clip, impossible to look away from. funny and frustrating and tense and meaningful
