Republicans were much better at math, which is why they did not actively provoke the QAnon extremist wing of the party. They certainly didn’t suggest that the people who voted for those candidates should form their own party.

Moderate Democrats have apparently gotten much worse at math since the very recent past when they blamed the left for losses in 2000, 2016, and 2024.

We actually had the 16th highest mortality rate in the world and it largely resulted from the ignorant asshats who were *resisting* the common sense protection measures Fauci was promoting like masking and distancing. What a colossal asshole.

I watched Superstore in 2023, and I was pleasantly surprised that there was a whole Covid season. A big box store of all places was a great setting for stories that incorporated the pandemic.

Whereas, the response to covid in media has been to do anything possible not to acknowledge protection methods (i.e., masks or even the folks who still avoid large gatherings, etc).

I recall that even when AIDS was not directly addressed in media at the time, there would be an overt reference to protection against the disease ("safe sex"). I remember the camera lingering on an open condom wrapper on the nightstand after a sex scene in 1992's BOOMERANG.

I commented on Jessica's quote post of this that it all comes off as a trauma response - avoidance being a classic sign of unprocessed trauma, after all. "Just pretend it didn't happen and maybe it will go away" is extremely unhealthy, particularly given the rise in extremism is directly correlated.

That's crazy. But is so consistent, unfortunately, with where we are as a nation. M*A*S*H -- an avowedly anti-war series -- was on the air during the final years of Vietnam.

to my knowledge the closest the network ever permitted artists or audiences to acknowledge the trauma hangover of covid was to launch 157 shows about rich middle aged divorced white guys who are kinda sad now.

This made me think of when my Dad died and Todd Helbing called me in the middle of shooting the S&L pilot to say, "I'm calling you so you hear it straight from me - don't work this week. Be with your family." He was telling me I didn't have to be a hero and work through it.

True, but ignoring Covid completely feels too much like ignoring AIDS in the 1980s. That was a right-wing position that the arts wisely resisted.

In 1948’s ROPE, there is a reference to a character being injured in the war. This was obviously not specifically a film about WWII.

So, the cultural documentation of Covid through media is that well-off people hung out at home and baked a lot, then everything returned to normal.

And dramatically, the opposing views on masking, vaccination … all worth exploring but mostly ignored.
