The football may be over, but this campaign isn't. FIFA cannot continue celebrating diversity & inclusion while allowing national associations that discriminate against LGBT+ footballers to compete without consequence. We'll keep pressing FIFA to enforce its own anti-discrimination rules.

The contradiction was clearest at Iran v Egypt in Seattle. The match was celebrated locally as part of Pride weekend - yet both competing countries criminalise homosexuality & discriminate against LGBT+ footballers. Pride branding is not a substitute for action.

FIFA replied - but failed to say whether it had asked the 11 associations to confirm that gay players could be selected. It cited general commitments to inclusion while avoiding the specific discrimination we raised. petertatchellfoundation.org/fifa-letter-...

Why did this matter? For footballers in Iran, Egypt & nine other World Cup countries, coming out could mean persecution, prosecution or death. A brilliant gay player would be more likely to be jailed than selected for their national team. That is football discrimination.

On 15 June, we wrote to FIFA. We asked it to obtain written assurances that every participating football association would select gay players on merit - or suspend those that refused. Discrimination is already prohibited by FIFA’s own rules. petertatchellfoundation.org/fifa-urged-t...
