For many years “news” has gone from what HAS happened to what MIGHT happen. Speculation rather than reporting, speculation that often influences events. Last week Reform lost a by election badly and that IS news, it happened, and it’s barely being reported.

Perhaps we should all join the DHSS reenactment society. All dress like it’s 1988 and fax each other memos. Although I think Reform look back to the halcyon days of the 1920/30s when poverty pushed some people to populist politics and there was no NHS.

Blair’s position on Europe (as opposed to his view on the USA) seems sensible. But it’s a reverse Catch 22 - we should only re-enter the EU from a position of strength, but if we were in a position of strength why would we want to re-enter the EU?

I’m going to read Blair’s essay. Whilst, no doubt, I will disagree with much of it - he is the UK’s last largely successful PM, particularly to the electorate (despite Iraq). Worth reading. I also think that a coherent policy position is more important than personality in a new PM, is correct.

Completely agree with this. Not saying the media should never do vox pops but they are completely useless in helping us to understand the position of political parties and seeing them challenged though evidence and good research. They are just part of the shallow populist world we seem to suffer.
