Former Director for Energy Transition at White House NSC, Advisor to Secretary of Energy. Wistful for energy twitter.

The Senate text on energy removes the stackability provision in the 45X manufacturing credit (i.e. a manufacturer could get the credit for every segment of a value chain) discouraging vertical integration - the thing that PRC firms benefit most from: www.utilitydive.com/news/china-v...

US needs vertically integrated solar manufacturing to fight China’s market dominance: RE+ speakers“China has done so much work to be vertically integrated ... from the polysilicon all the way to the modules,” said Arielle Brown, director of government affairs at chemical company Wacker.www.utilitydive.com

Latest w/ @milomcbride.bsky.social: “The U.S. is at a strategic crossroads on whether it can compete in the global EV market, innovate next-gen batteries, and secure mineral supply chains. The first step is recognizing that all three imperatives are intertwined.” foreignpolicy.com/2025/06/05/e...

The House bill is anything but a recipe for energy dominance, security, or affordability. Everything you need to know here:

What does the GOP Megabill passed by the House this morning mean for the US energy transition, energy prices, emissions and the economy? REPEAT Project's new analysis has you covered. Read the new report or listen to our recent SHIFT KEY episode diving into the details. 🔗 ⤵️ 🔌💡

Nice shoutout from @robinsonmeyer.bsky.social of the Hanford 2GW solar + storage project part of DOE’s Cleanup to Clean Energy initiative. Wonk alert: this project uses Atomic Energy Act leasing authorities !

Robinson Meyer

NEW SHIFT KEY We sit down with Heatmap senior reporter @jael.bsky.social to chat about the new permitting landscape for US renewables, Trump’s all-out war on offshore wind, solar’s sunnier outlook, and how it all ties into the MAHA-adjacent anti-renewables movement. heatmap.news/podcast/shif...

Yup, and organizations like the Environmental Law Institute continue to train govt officials from other countries on the success of Clean Air Act and Clean Water Act programs and how they can be replicated.

David Roberts

Your regular reminder that the US air & water pollution laws passed in the 60s & 70s -- and the elaborate federal bureaucracy created to administer them -- constitute one of the most successful gov't interventions in history. WILDLY successful. The envy of the world.

While the confusion persists on the federal funding “pause” and rumors of widespread grant award cancellations, it’s worth flagging potential statutory and constitutional claims awardees can bring: 1/x

143

Cannot emphasize this more. Please give this thread a read. The same story is playing out with DOE-funded projects—tens of billions of dollars of awarded *contracts* tied up as a result of the “pause.” This will have ripple effects across the economy and companies/NGOs/states should make it known.

Zealan Hoover

Not paying grantees with signed grant agreements is illegal. While there are certain activities EPA has discretion to pause, such as designing new competitions and making new awards, once a grant award is signed with a grantee the government is legally obligated to pay them. 🔌💡 3/X

“Germany should support EU protection of viable European industrial sectors facing an onslaught as a result of China’s active industrial policies. At the same time, it should allow cheap imports in areas where Europe has little to no manufacturing.” IEA’s tech perspectives report Ch6 is good on this

Germany's economic model is facing an existential crisis. A new CER.EU report by @sandertordoir.bsky.social and Brad Setser outlines how Europe's largest economy can survive the second China shock after dodging the first. 1/ www.cer.eu/publications...

Imagine the results in four years if the new admin simply just continued the implementation of BIL, IRA, and CHIPS….would be legacy-defining for any president.

Great read from @amyturner.bsky.social if you’re looking for more analysis on what the practical impact of the day 1 energy EOs will be:

Amy Turner

Do I owe you an email? It's because I've been lost in the sea of EOs. Here's my take on what Trump's Day One EOs mean for cities, community partners, and other subnationals . 📜🏙️https://blogs.law.columbia.edu/climatechange/2025/01/24/trump-2-0-day-one-considerations-for-cities-and-community-partners/

Important to note the vast majority of BIL/IRA grant and loan $ is going towards manufacturing/supply chain + grid projects--none of which is implicated in Sec. 2 of the Day 1 EO. Also, @romany-webb.bsky.social perfectly captures the implications of the BIL/IRA disbursement "pause" in this piece.

Stephen Lacey

🧵 Many assumed IRA rollbacks wouldn't be day-one priorities for Trump. "That was wishful thinking," reports @maeveallsup.bsky.social. Here's what's actually happening with the funding pause for #renewableenergy and #electricvehicles. (1/5) Good resource for #energysky peeps w/ companies:

Sec. Granholm in the NYT on why to keep BIL/IRA/CHIPS intact: "Other governments are waiting with bated breath for us to pare back our grants, loans and tax credits so they can use the same tools to sweet-talk the next generation of factories to their shores." www.nytimes.com/2025/01/23/o...

Great summary of the Day 1 EOs. Most telling is the declaration of a national energy emergency that leaves out the largest source of new energy capacity (solar) from the definition of “energy.”

Michael Gerrard

Here is my summary of the environmental, energy and climate provisions in the executive orders that Trump issued last night. bit.ly/4h1uux3 Bottom line: Doing everything they can to increase both supply of and demand for fossil fuels.
