interesting insider goss on Situational Awareness

Quantian

1. He was unbelievably good at security selection. From his published 13F, he would *still* be beating the S&P 500 by about 30% this year even at the trough, and for most fund managers the 13F clone is worse than your actual performance (it’s a quarterly snapshot that captures no trading activity)

also, you know, nazis and transphobes

We're literally watching Substack writers realize they're getting more "followers" (closed) than "subscribers" (open) and worried about the future *again*. I think it's worth breaking that cycle more so than it is to build the next thing.

glad to know playboy is on the right side of the sexual revolution ;)

Playboy

What are the incel men up to over on X? Focussing on a quirk of women’s bodies most of us have never even thought about before now. Our take? "Making women mad and getting likes from fellow incels is all they have going for them." Read now: www.playboy.com/read/sex/the...

I think there's going to be skilled AI use and lazy AI use the same way there is Ansel Adams and there is a cruddy phone photo of the moon over the Sierras (tool choice and skill with the tool is important in any medium)

The Questionable Authority

The process of realizing a vision with generative AI involves a lot of work, an understanding of your technology, the effects of settings, model selection, word choice, etc. At a certain point, I'm not sure how one says that the choice involved in a photograph is creative, but that stuff isn't.

everything I learn about WSocial makes me trust them *less* which is quite impressive; that's some real misrepresentation if it's what they're saying

Wimster9030 🇪🇺 🇧🇪

I know, Daniel, but that's not the way WSocial "sold" it to us. We could only access trough ID-verification so we know for 100% they are EU and a "real person". That was the whole point. So we went trough that process, but now it seems that the backdoor are the other ATProt platforms to get in too.

I know nothing about them but I feel like they may not have earned that name

it strikes me that this is similar to the way misogyny and sexism hurts *men* by isolating them from their feelings, from strong relationships with each other and with women, from the good things in life bigotry narrows down the life of the bigot enormously

Mark Chadbourn

Culture Wars have destroyed Conservatives everywhere. They used to be able to adopt reasonable, evidence-based positions on some issues. Now if something is associated with the Left they’ll slice off their entire face rather than go near it.

I still think he's wasted not pushing renewables along but if he can make any progress on having us not be such idiots about the EU...

Best for Britain

Miliband has taken back UK-EU relations from the Cabinet Office. Europe Minister Hamish Falconer has linked European reconnection directly to Burnham's big-picture domestic policy. The message? Europe's back on the agenda. https://www.politico.eu/article/ed-miliband-uk-brexit-reset-foreign-office/

it's hard to tell from seeing daily plots of drone strikes what the real (sorry) impact is; looks like it's a LOT

Financial Times

An FT analysis of refinery layouts, photographs, satellite images and thermal-infrared data shows that damage at several major Russian refineries has persisted for weeks or even months after attacks ft.trib.al/yTfCIfY
